January is Fall Prevention Month: Simple Steps That Can Prevent a Life-Changing Fall

Why Falls Happen

Most falls occur at home and are caused by a combination of environmental hazards and physical changes:

  • Poor lighting that hides obstacles

  • Cluttered pathways and loose rugs

  • Slippery surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens

  • Stairs without secure handrails

  • Muscle weakness, balance changes, or vision issues

  • Rushing to answer the phone or get to the bathroom

As we age, reaction time slows and balance becomes less forgiving. A small trip that once caused a stumble can now result in a serious injury.

High-Risk Areas in the Home

Certain spaces account for the majority of falls:

Bathrooms

Wet surfaces, tight spaces, and the need to transition from sitting to standing make bathrooms the most dangerous room in the house.

Bedrooms

Falls often happen at night when getting out of bed in the dark.

Stairs & Hallways

Uneven steps, missing handrails, and poor lighting create major risk.

Entryways & Living Areas

Shoes, cords, pets, and throw rugs become hidden hazards.

Practical Prevention Strategies

Small upgrades can dramatically reduce risk:

  • Install grab bars in showers and near toilets

  • Use non-slip mats in tubs and on tile floors

  • Add night lights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms

  • Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing

  • Keep walkways clear of cords and clutter

  • Add handrails on both sides of stairways

  • Use a shower chair to reduce fatigue and instability

  • Consider a raised toilet seat to reduce strain when standing

For many people, a properly fitted walker or cane provides the confidence needed to move safely and stay active.

The Confidence Factor

After a fall, many people develop a fear of falling again. This fear leads to less movement, which weakens muscles and worsens balance—ironically increasing fall risk. Preventing the first fall is critical, but restoring confidence is just as important.

A safer home encourages movement, independence, and peace of mind—for both individuals and their families.

Safety Is Independence

Fall prevention is not about limiting activity. It’s about enabling it. The right products and home adjustments allow people to continue cooking, bathing, and moving through their home with confidence.

At Mobility & More, we specialize in helping families identify risks and choose the right solutions—from grab bars and bathroom safety equipment to mobility aids and home access products. Every home and every person is different. Our goal is to create a safer environment without sacrificing independence.

This Fall Prevention Month, take ten minutes to walk through your home. Look for tripping hazards, dark corners, and places where support would help. One small change today can prevent a life-changing injury tomorrow.
